Envato is going for a Crunchie award! This year, we’ve decided to try and get a nomination for ‘Best Bootstrapped Startup’ at the 2012 TechCrunch Crunchie awards. If you’re unfamiliar, this is the ‘Oscars’ of the tech world. If you’re willing, we would love your help making it there!

Why are we going for this nomination?

Although I really believe that investment and early funding are an incredibly important part of the startup eco-system, I must admit to being proud that we managed to grow through our early years with our own savings, hard work and careful spending.

Envato’s story most definitely sprung from humble beginnings. The company started out as one site, FlashFox (now ActiveDen), a place where anyone could buy and sell Flash components and templates. Through a lot of hard work, faith in our vision and the efforts of our amazing community, we’ve grown into a huge network of sites working to fulfil our mission of helping people to learn and earn, online.

Collis explains in the Bootstrapped, Profitable and Proud series on 37 Signals on which Envato was featured:

“To get started we spent about $40,000 or so, plus a lot of sweat and hard work. The money came from the cofounders’ savings, and was pretty much the sum total of those savings!”

We’re extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished over the last six years. We’ve come a long way, growing from four young entrepreneurs into a company with more than 100 passionate staff all around the world, over 20,000 talented authors, and 2 million members. But there’s still so much for us to do. We want to continue to grow Envato, and find new ways to achieve our mission of helping people to learn and earn. We want to support our community and spread the word about Envato and the marketplaces – this is why we’re asking for your help in getting this nomination!
