Just curious, because it seems like its just some type of software, but I am not understanding the point of it, can anyone elaborate a bit?

I am not really sure what it is either but from what i have been told is that it is a server that simply allows you to stream videos.

Its not a progressive download but an actaul stream. Allows hundereds of people to view the same video file without really effecting the user experience.

Also it allows a person to jump to any point in the video to view a certain portion of it with having to wait for that part of the video to download.

Hopefully some one can come along and answer you better!

Flash Media Server allow developers to create multiuser applications. These applications could say combine streaming video, chat and webcam interaction.

You create your applications with a language called server-side actionscript.

if you have a site like youtube or myspace where tens of thousands of users are accessing one of your videos at the same time, the flash media server software keeps the video from crashing, or the site from crashing:

It is very expensive and you use it when you have 10 or more server clustered together for your site:

The usual rule of thumb is that you need a server for every ten thousand members added to your site:

Myspace and youtube servers are in the tens of thousands that are housed in massive buildings.

Their monthly server bill is in the millions every month.

The flash media server software is used in conjunction with the thousands if not tens of thousands clustered servers all to make the invidual user experience free of crashes.

I know this because me and some partners were going to start another youtube and went through tens of thousands, months of planning and consultation and in the end we abandoned the project.

Do you know that out of the hundreds of sites out there, only 4 have made any real news or profit ?

Just so you know myspace doesnt use Flash Media Server, neither does google video or youtube.

Google Video uses faux (fake) streaming. Youtube doesnt stream at all, it progressivley loads and same goes for myspace.

Can you tell me what technique youtube is using to show video from a specific point. For example let say i watch a video and i click in the middle of the video progress bar and youtube’s player shows you the video from that point.

How they do it?

@FlashGuruLTD
i think Youtube uses for bigger movies some sort of streaming …
check this 9 minute clip for example… play with the track…
for movies bigger than 7 or 8 minutes it uses a special streaming server…
