It was my wedding anniversary in December. (Number 27.) I took a chance with the gift I bought my wife.

I say, “took a chance” because I bought her a Fitbit One activity tracker, and was a bit worried it would send the wrong message. I didn’t want her to think I was saying she was too fat on our anniversary – because that was definitely not what I was saying.

Well, thankfully the gift wasn’t misunderstood, and was a huge hit. A week later I bought one for myself. Basically, it’s a device that keeps track of how active you are, mainly by counting how many steps you take throughout the day. And it syncs with an online database so you can keep track of your progress. I thought it would make for some good competition because the Fitbit app ranks your friends by how much activity they’ve done in the last week. It’s me against the wife!

Tracking my activity was a revelation. I already knew that working from home led to less activity during the day, and I’d put on lots of weight. But the Fitbit spelled it out.

They recommend that the average person take 10,000 steps each day. Working from home, I only take 2,000. If I go to the shops or something, I might get up to 3,000 steps. I’m way behind.

I was determined to complete 10,000 steps a day. I was already sort of in the habit of going for a walk each day (in practice, I only actually did this a few times a week). So I’d start walking (normally around 10pm), and wouldn’t stop until I reached 10,000 steps. And with only 2,000 steps or so completed before my walk, I’d be walking for more than an hour! Ouch!

So here I am a month later. I don’t always complete 10,000 steps, but I’m normally close. I feel more educated about how sedentary my lifestyle had become, and I’m doing something about it. And I’ve realised that I can’t leave most of my exercise till 10 o’clock at night!

So I’d love to hear your advice. This week I’m trying two shorter walks a day – one when I wake up, and one after dinner. But I need to find other ways of being more active throughout the day. What do you do? I love to hear your ideas!

And if you have a Fitbit, I’d love to add you to my friends list!

It looks cool, I’d actually need this as well and it has some interesting features, does it really do all the stuff they say on their page? Are you satisfied with it? :)

Edit: Damn, just saw that it’s only available for US / Canada

I’m very happy with it. It works well, and the battery lasts a week or two. It syncs with my iPhone and shows helpful graphs, and you get a helpful summary of your progress right on the display of the device. I’ve also been using it to track my sleep, including how many times my sleep is broken during the night.

No, I’m in Australia, and they’re everywhere here. Where are you?

We sound alike. ;) Actually, I was a lot more active when I was younger.

Btw. happy anniversary.

Thanks!

Looks really nice, Adrian, shame it’s not available in the UK. I’m on the verge of buying myself a Nike Fuel Band too but wanting to scope out competitor products first.

I sweeped through ebay.co.uk and this one has worldwide shipping at the best price: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fitbit-ONE-Wireless-Activity-and-Sleep-Tracker-Black-or-Burgundy-Brand-NEW-/121039023934?pt=UK_Health_Beauty_Dieting_Slimming_ET

Not as cheap as in USA though, but still, this could be very useful.

Check out your “Local” Amazon Sites, like in Germany. I mean it´s possible to buy it through the “Offical” Site for Germany and also via Amazon. So maybe you guys can find it on “your” Amazon .. :)

btw, i think i´m going to get one, too !

Wow, there’s a lot of interest in these devices. Fitbit also have a cheaper model – the Fitbit Zip – which is about half the price, but doesn’t track your sleep.

I was also considering the Nike Fuel Band and Jawbone Up, but the Fitbit was cheaper (and more available in Australia), and I preferred a device I didn’t have to wear on my wrist.

You just kicked me up the… and made me order my Fuel Band…

I need motivating to get my… into gear and exercise more!

I’m sure you’re right that sitting here working in an office I’m doing nowhere near the physical activity that I should be!
