As many authors here, I’m using a private GitHub repository for each project. It’s not a secret that GIT provides a lot of benefits not just for maintainer of library, but for other developers who use it, especially if it’s JavaScript library.

Let’s assume and that I’m an Exclusive Author and I choose 100% GPL. Can I put my script on a public GitHub repository (if link to it is provided only after purchase)? If answer is “yes”, can I put it there without choosing 100% GPL?

Thank you.

(I’m asking this on forum, instead of private ticket to Envato support, as others might be interested in answer)

So I finally got an answer from Envato support, turns out that you can’t host the code in public GitHub repository no matter if you choose 100% GPL or not, as it violates Exclusive Author agreement. Pitty.

I think private should be fine (why not?) but public wouldn’t. Are you sure they talked about a private repo?

@revaxarts, I didn’t say that private repositories aren’t allowed – they are. I was asking just just about public reps.

Yes @Semenov, this is the most stupid issue on the marketplaces. You are not allowed to redistribute your 100% GPL code, but anyone else is! Envato answered this sometime ago in a thread.

So you can’t create a public repo with your GPL code, but i could. See the irony? :D

GPL items should be treated as non exclusive items.

end of story.

I think we need to make it clear first.

First Case: If it is complete product and you sell it here, you can’t put it on public Github repo. If it is available for public on Github, then why you sell it here and why buyer have to buy it here.

Second Case: If it is only partial code that exists in your theme, you are free to make it available on public Github repo, as long as it is not your “full” product. It is your code.

This time, some authors already do this because of updated WordPress Theme requirements. We extract some codes from our themes and make it portable into a plugin and some of us make it available for free to download from our website or WordPress repository. And of course creating public Github repo for this plugin is also totally acceptable.

NOTE: When dealing with Envato Support, we have to be as clear as possible… :) I am serious… :( We can get different answer by only using different sentences…

As Ruben said is not allowed, but since no one is watching (imagine staff losing time checking github and compare with code in item sold here) you are relatively safe,

except now they know you do it :) so expect the envato SWAT team to knock on your door
