Hello all!

Last month i have bought a wordpress theme (not from themeforest). I have bought a lot of them (and downloaded free ones) to mess around and learn the wordpress coding (former joomla coder here). Now i am making my first theme for wordpress, and i have this theme that i would like to use the part that handles the shortcodes. The template is premium, but the php+javasciprt is licensed as GPL .

Quote from the license inside the theme folder: “All PHP and JS files are released under the GPL 3 .0 unless specified otherwised within the file itself.”

So my question is: can i use the code inside my template? I know i should ask a lawyer and the owner, but first i would like to hear your oppinions on this. All the original shortcodes would be deleted, and make new ones, i would only use the part that puts the buttons in the editor, and then renders the shortcodes as html.

Thank you for any feedback!

As far as I know you can as long as you include a license file with the download :)

yes, i would include the original license in the folder, and also put a copyright note to the original author in the php and js files’ headers (there are 2 files involved) thank you for the answer mate :)

You don;t have to include any licences when uploading but you obviously need to have the right to use everything.

okay i have just sent an email to the author. i just wanted to know what the community says since i am new here, and do not know the drill yet. so in general, if a script is released with a GPL license, i am free to use it in my future themes, right?
