As we are talking about how to make it easier for customers to find items, I’d like to link to this thread I started some months ago:

http://videohive.net/forums/thread/request-category-filter-on-portfolio-pages/116375

Some dev recently told me that the portfolio page is technically a search result page. So it doesn’t fit in my head why we don’t have the category filter on a portfolio page, especially since some author’s portfolio has several hundred to thousand items.

Now, as we are talking about adding facets to the search results page, I’d like to bring this up again and kindly ask everyone to not forget the portfolio pages. A category filter is a must here, some other facets would be very user-friendly, too.

I totally agree with this. We also need some (if not all) of the faceted-search tools on our portfolio pages.

that’s not on topic to this thread. the thread is about specifically search facets, or items included/tools on the search function.

But what you’re saying is right. any page showing a list of results could, in theory, be sorted by category, or any other sortable field.

i was going to start a thread that really includes this topic myself. but it’s in regards to ratings.

The portfolio is technically a search page so it should be easy to implement as well

as the portfolio page is simply a search result for one author, I wouldn’t say it’s off-topic. We are asking for the same search facets that are talked about here, the only difference is that the page we are talking about has even less controls for filtering and we want this to be fixed.

actually, this should have been fixed months or years ago. but here we are at the same old story…

first just to be clear, i didn’t meant that to come across as negative, or that i was speaking authoritatively at all. I was just mentioning that the topic is specifically about the search facets. not design elements on other pages.

That being said, i agree the spirit of the topic is the same, just that the facet project is really specific. I know this becuase I’ve accidentally forked the topic over and over since i got involved. not intentionally lol

right, but my point was that this is a very specific group about the project only of facets on the search. it’s very specific. i have repeatedly drug it off topic unintentionally the same way. for instance, I mentioned things like Boolean qualifiers, AJAX features etc. but they aren’t on topic.

this is very specifically about the facets and how they appear. not about design elements of other pages.

that being said, what you’re both talking about is extremely important, and I’ve got a short list of other items that deal specifically with search that I’d like to see changed.

believe me, i agree with the conversation; as a very active buyer the seach function/feature is without question the most important part of this entire site. It’s the critical tool for me.

So there’s two things here really 1) 2) You’d like to see this done as part of this project

1) You’d like to see the category facet being introduced on the Portfolio page with perhaps some other facets. I agree that this would be useful. I’ve read this suggestion on the forum and I’ve heard it brought up face-to-face in user interviews over Skype.

2) This kind of sits in a grey zone. It’s not a core part of this project but I can see how it’s related. I’d really like one of our developers to come in here and respond to it because no design work is needed to address this. It’s not something I would “fix” personally but I’ll bring it up in our next meeting and see what our devs say.

Question (which Envato probably won’t answer) you describe faceted search as:

what’s faceted search? It’s fancy search-world lingo meaning being able to filter search results pages. The ability to filter by price, ratings, or sales range when searching.

Why do you leave out “time period” as a facet ? I explained previously that since I became a top seller on ActiveDen.. I still get sales on 7 year old redundant AS2 files to this day when over the years there have been newer, better AS3 files from other authors – but my old redundant stuff still sells because they have high sales. This is hard evidence that you need a “time period” in search. Why does Envato want to keep pushing old content on the market places, and refuse to add time period as part of the search, you’re not only showing buyers old content, you’re making it increasingly harder to sell new items.

No matter what other facet you have… time period is the most important one to keep content relevant, fresh and competitive. I don’t make this stuff up, I’ve been here for 7 years, I know how the system works, and it’s totally flawed without having a time period in search – I wish Envato would look at real data and get serious, and stop guessing how it works, survey buyers and ask how easy it is to find stuff – all the answers are right there for you. Asking authors will always be biased if the system is a bit biased… so look at real data, ask the buyers what they want – they’re the ones using the search, and trying to discover content. I honestly can’t believe it has taken so many years of talking about the search, and we still at this point of asking authors what they think. ASK THE BUYERS who use this site every day browsing content, and see what their opinions and suggestions are, you might be surprised.

the time period has been thoroughl;y discussed. i know because I agree with you completely and have been bringing it up from the very beginning. Actually before that if you count email :). The way I mentioned it, we will be able to use it to sort by rating or sales based on time frames. not just from creation, but also by updated date etc.

I believe that’s how it is going to work.

This is fantastic news :) You just have to understand that some of us having been talking about this for years, without anything being done.. so it’s good to hear that some suggestions are being considered – will wait and see what Envato comes up with.
