My boss who is in the real estate business was looking to move away from buildium and find something better, possibly a custom made website. How much would it cost to make a custo made website where:

A: clients could log into their own account

B: the company can upload items specially view-able to the account associated with the items that are organized in different ways, chronologically and according to expenses and income which the client can also download.

Someone else told me it would cost around $5000, but buildium is $100-$200 a month so $5000 is expensive in those terms.

It depends on so many factors like, who it is building it e.g. freelancer .v. agency, where they are located, what platform, technology you are talking about building it on, who is designing it etc etc.

$5K sounds very reasonable and actually well under what a decent private developer would charge, let alone a well known agency. Of course there will be “others” who would do it for that and maybe even cheaper but at the end of the day you get what you pay for.

Alex is right it depends on many factors and an exact brief. You would if someone on here that would do it between 3-5 k easily but to give you an idea we work as 13 man agency just outside london and just finished a similarish site for a bespoke estate agency and that was £13k and I could find you a ton of people who would charge a lot more than that.

Agree with the others, but also make sure you’re getting someone reputable. The number one issue with new/cheaper freelancers is “dropping off” after some time. Just keep constant communication and make sure both parties know the plan 100%.

Good luck!

Is there perhaps a simple file hosting site that can do that stuff? Maybe one step up from dropbox where you make the accounts, or something powered by php templates to be cheaper?

There probably is but it’ll be crap, you get what you pay for, if it costs $5k and you pay someone $500 you’re not going to get what you want

WordPress could handle something like that but again it comes down to quality build. Customising functionality you are talking about let alone to create a custom theme around it (assuming you are not using a template theme) takes time and costs.

Also you are I assume going to charge people to create accounts and use the site? If so then you have more security requirements and safe guarding through quality build to consider.

If your boss wants to do it on the cheap then its doable but long term he will probably live to regret it and it will cost a lot more if the developer vanishes and you are unable to update the site let alone if it broke or something went wrong.

At the end of the day there are some seriously good authors and developers on here and other freelance services, and of course going to a central London, Madrid, Paris, New York agency will cost more (and are not 110% going to be better) BUT the assurance that accompanies it is worth it if you value the outcome.

ThemeBeans has it right you need to find a repaatable and reliable developer at whatever cost.

Well I guess it seems no matter what it’s going to cost some money. I don’t know however if the boss wants to charge clients per account. Me and the accountant just want a website where people can view stuff we upload that’s organized by date and property and specific to each client, maybe with a front page of updates and news important to the business, and our opinion matters somewhat to the boss for making decisions. If he doesn’t want to charge clients per account I would assume it could be something cheaper but it would have to be simpler but easy for clients and not super high tech not only to be cheaper for a web designer but to be worth it over buildium.

Make sure your boss understands the difference between a new custom build and “Buildium”. Looking at the software to build a “custom replica” system like that would cost tens of thousands of dollars (at best).

A custom built site would operate differently and is unlikely to have endless features (many of which you probably don’t use anyhow) like a “property focussed tool”.

While it is not especially professional depending on the size of your business there are a few property listing theme son here that can do more of less what you are talking about http://themeforest.net/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&term=+listing&order_by=date&category=wordpress&new_term=property . That said you would still be very advised to hire a freelancer to help you set it up properly to prevent it falling apart and to help update it going forward.
