Create 4 Charity

Hi guys, an idea was flowing and I’d like to share the spark with all of you. I’m very interested in your feedback, as this may possibly involve some of you, authors and staff.

Now, I know only a minority really cares about charities and so on, but nonetheless this has nothing to do with anybody giving money. Is all about the art.

After brainstorming to come up with a practical and bureaucracy-free way of raising charity money through all marketplaces, here is the spark:

When an author uploads a new item, he/she can have this option:

All author’s who donate an item, after its approval will receive a badge:

When item is approved, it will be published for sale in the Charity Portfolio:

Discussing this idea with another creative, I was faced with these questions:

• limiting the number of items it could be used, otherwise Envato would go out of business if all files were for charity.

Good point, maybe each author is allowed a certain number in a certain period of time.

• deciding which charity (or charities) money should go to.

Maybe, each month the money can go to a different charity, out of a list provided by Envato.

• programming – how to code the backend so that submitted items get posted to one account.

I have no idea, as its not my area. Any and all feedback from devs and experts are welcomed. Is this hard to implement?

I think it will just become a substitute for (the not allowed) freebie giveaways. Don’t see it happening, regardless of what my personal opinion about it is.

Not sure what became of it – it was before my time.

Though I seem to remember in a more recent discussion of this idea badges for donators were definitely deemed to be inappropriate as it would put stigma on authors without the donation badge.

Just to make it clear to everyone, I don’t claim this is an original idea, as charity has been done for centuries. I would just like to be in an environment where this sort of action is thought about and put into action.

lol, i had the same idea a while back but i didn’t set it in action….... it was done before but it didn’t worked out

Nice! How about now, do you feel like participating? I don’t know what happened in the past, but I honestly don’t see how it can go wrong for the future. What do you think?

This is actually a ridiculous comparison; one is badge, sometimes awarded (though not automatically) for something that not everyone even gets the opportunity to do (not everyone discovers copyright violations), the badge you suggest would be awarded (or not) for making a choice. There is no stigma attached to not getting an award but there can definitely be a stigma associated with making a choice perceived by some as mean or uncaring.

I remember this kind of discussion sometime ago and in the end everyone was settled with donating for the local causes. Also a sheriff badge is different but just like you said, yep, many had the stigma that’s why you see a sheriff badge now more often with many members. Some might not like it but a large number did reported violations just to get that silver badge.

Also if it’s for a charity cause then why not do it secretly? Is there any need to show that one has donated his/her item for charity?

Edit: Also I do not think there’s anything wrong with people who reported violations for getting a badge but I fairly think that showing that you have donated for a charity ruins pure intentions of donating. And just like tinman said, it can be definitely a stigma associated with making choice perceived by some as mean.
