Hey guys, some of you here created some “social networks” for designers, I remember that freebiepixels and psdbucket were created by members of Envato, so I need some tips here. Never mind if you don’t have any experience, I’d like to know what you have to do if you want to succeed with it.

I created a community for Moldovan students abroad (I’m not posting the link because of the forum rules) it was created a week ago and there are 13 registered members, but I’d like it to be more active so any tips will be welcome!

Thank you. Alex.

This will help: http://www.guykawasaki.com/enchantment/

The problem with creating a community from scratch is no one wants to hang around somewhere were there are no other people.

What type of software you are using i mean CMS , secondly as a suggestion i would advice you to work on GUI and marketing it can really help you, these both PSD Bucket, and freebie pixels you mentioned are based on Wordpress, and they are highly search engine optimized, i would suggest you to get your hands on wordpress its the best and most user friendly cms out there….

I’m using wordpress and buddypress because I’ve purchased a theme from ThemeForest, I’m satisfied with it, it allows to make groups, send messages, add friends, set up forums, etc.

@qae I know what you mean, it is difficult indeed to find the first members.

your best bet is to build a mailing list from loyal visitors to your site, then once it hits 400-500 people, maybe send a mass email letting them know you’re launching a community and to come and introduce themselves.

Then you get a surge of users rather than people coming along, signing up, seeing there is no one there and then leaving.

I’m using Huddle and it shows only text. (and a pic of course)

BTW , there are 15 registered members and some of them are starting to be active. It’s a good sign. :)
