I’m confused -

I’ve seen some templates use commercial fonts (like Myriad Pro), and those .js files have Adobe copyright in the header.

How is this allowed?

In other words, this means you can embed them in cufon etc. for free. :)

So if I buy any font, and convert it with Cufon and bundle with my theme, anyone can use that? Even if they didn’t buy the font?

Sounds strange to me…

I dont think you can bundle the font in with the final download. Just provide a link/info about the font used and the buyer can then buy/download the font or choose another font.

You are not bundling “the font”, but only it’s .js version which can technically be used only via cufon… so it can be only embedded… here you can generate .js file from standart font files:

BTW I am still talking here about fonts from Adobe Systems. For other fonts, you have to check the licenses or ask directly the author for a written permission, etc.

ok I found this thread. I’ve seen a few themes including embedded fonts, so what’s really allowed ? Everybody seem to have a different opinion, so maybe the best is to have an explicit answer from the font creator no ?

I’ve added the Museo typeface with Cufon inside one of my themes and since there where some doubts about using that font together with the Cufon script I’ve contacted the Creator of that font and he gave me written permission.

So when your not sure about things you need ask the creator of that font or dig trough there licenses.

And as for as i know of you can’t use Myriad Pro together with Cufon.

I asked Epicera and Webcrafters on this and they said too that it’s okay…

Here’s a quote from this topic http://themeforest.net/forums/thread/legal-font-use/15418

Fonts like MyriadPro, Helvetica Neue, Lubalin Demi, MayberryPro and so on are not free fonts, therefore you are doing something illegal by converting them for use with Cufon and redistributing them for sale with your templates.

So this is what i thought as well, always check the licenses of the font types. If anybody else has something to ad to this then feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
