Has anyone had any luck with figuring out a way to open up the WP admin for potential customers to play with before purchasing? Screenshots are one thing, but actually playing with the settings is a great way to sell your items.
What I would like is for it to just reset to default every 5 minutes or so. Or even better, potentially on every login they have their own little “version” of the theme they can play with but no one else will see the changes being made…
It’d be a great plugin idea for us Theme Developers.

I think you would be better of asking the guys at CodeCanyon. I have seen this test-the-backend methodology quite often.

Yes, themefuse has this and some other authors too. You’ll need customized WPMU (multisite) solution, it’s not very hard to setup. Every login can has it’s own instance, you can push theme updates to everyone, but they each can upload their own content and customize.

This is a great idea! I think theme authors would really benefit from allowing customers the chance to check out their theme’s back end as well as the front end.
A Multisite-based solution seems like a great idea. Wouldn’t be too hard to force a periodic clean-up too.

From my experience clients usually take A LOT of time to decide if they like something or not. So let’s say you configured a quick “demo” for a client with such system. If it’s wiped out every hour or even day there is no point. Such instance should stay for at least a month of inactivity.

This is true. Whichever time period an author chooses, I think it would be a great idea to let users know upfront in some way how long they have before it will be reset. It’s all about setting expectations!
