There’s a new service offered by this website [ link (dot) removed ]

What do you guys think? Will this be a apocalypse for freelancers that offers template customization services?

Hi.

Unfortunately, we don’t allow links to competing services/marketplaces, as it’s effectively considered self-servingpromotion.

P.S: the links actually get manually removed, writing them with spaces and (dots) won’t help that much :D

Very interesting. I hope motioncraver is getting his $30 every time someone orders a Meet Mike and Mary video. And this whole free preview video part is a bit disturbing… yes, it may be a low resolution preview, but they’re still using the Mike and Mary template to create a custom video every time someone gets one of these preview videos. Is that allowed? probably not.

Nice concept though… must be a bunch of XML action with Amazon S3 rendering. Or something like that, I’m no expert, but I had a client that did something pretty similar and I had to provide XML files for the projects.

@contrastblack Thanks for the promptitude, my intention was not to promote the link. I do a lot of template customization on different freelancing websites for different customers and I’m afraid that I will get out of work with a service like that around.

@StencilMedia Is good for clients, bad for freelancers. IDK about the legal stuff, I think it’s covered. How things went for your client?

No harm done, and thanks for being a sport about it :)

Regarding the OP issue, technically, there have always been various cheap alternatives around, and effectively even freelancers promoting “their services” based on other peoples templates, and yet the world is still spinning, and we’re all around doing what we do best.

The only people that really need worry is the clients in this case, and it should spark a bit of interest if such websites promote “custom work” based on templates they’ve seen on VH for example, as that’s a sure pointer towards an amateur posing to be as skilled as an author (if he’d actually be skilled, he’d have his own items and portfolio to show imho).

So to you I say: Welcome! Worry, but don’t worry! :D

The service doesn’t offer too much room for customization, you can’t edit too many attributes of a template through the website so I guess there will be customers left out that will need more specific services. Regarding the skill level, in my case, I have the required skills to edit any template but I don’t have yet the skills and experience to create a template from scratch, I’ll get there in time, nobody was born with this skill. I don’t think it’s a bad thing if I sell my services for doing just the customization part, the author sells his template, I make some money by editing it and the customer is happy, I see no harm in this. From what I know there’s nothing wrong or blameworthy about that. In my opinion some of the authors charges way too much for customizing a template, but that’s debatable. I never posed as an skilled author, I’m always honest about what I can do and what I can’t with my clients.
