Is there anyway to customize the output of the default WP widgets for your theme?

For instance, on the searchbar, I don’t want it to display the “search” button or the “Search for:” text.

Instead I want to use javascript to put text inside the search bar (To search, type and hit enter) so when they click on it it removes the text, etc. I know how to do this part but I don’t know how to edit the default searchbar widget output.

Anybody know how?

Create a searchform.php and put in your own custom search form, then call the search form by using

<?php get_search_form(); ?>

For backwards compatibility for people with Javascript disabled, you should remove the search button with Javascript and then bind to click, focus, change events, etc. With Javascript disabled it will just look like a search form.
