@digitalimpact is it hard to configure your Linux server? How much it took you to learn all the stuff? I’m getting a bit sick to pay $20/month to MT and not have such a good speed at all..

Since I am a noob at Linux, took me about 1 week to wrap my head around setting up the server and add sites / config /email server and so on. Most of this was spent setting up the email server.

So, besides the email server setup, which is a freaking pain, everything else is easy to setup; they also have solid tutorials. You just need to get comfy with Terminal/SSH :)

I’m now running nginx + Varnish and it’s, like I said, insanely fast. MediaTemple – had that too, it’s dead slow compared to this (and it’s 4 times more expensive).
Contact me (in romana) if you need any info, will be glad to share my experience(s).

@subwaymatch – thank you :)

DO have a one-click MX record setup for Google Apps email, so that would make it 95% easier to switch ;)

I was too stupid not to register one – now Google Apps is not free anymore :(

We’re in the process of migrating all our sites to Dediserve (http://www.dediserve.com/) and they are great! Support is fantastic too.

It’s been a sharp learning experience moving from a managed to an unmanaged server but all good knowledge to have.

We just migrated to Media Temple… Definately better than hostgator, although we had some speed issues at the second day… Everything runs smoothly now.

That’s irrelevant (not to mention childish…). Shared hosts have their limits, in both what they can do and how much they can afford to price themselves. MediaTemple is one of the most expensive shared hosts, and it does the job for item demos, for many elite authors around here.

To expand on “limits”: my $5 VPS trumps any package from that managed WordPress hosting mentioned earlier, in terms of performance (first two, don’t even come close). But that hosting is managed, mine’s not. It all depends on your needs, not on how much money you make.

Great discussion and very valuable information!

I never thought about VPS server, over the past few years when I was working for design company I used go daddy for a while, pure shit.

As I said now I’m using 1and1 and satisfied most of the time, actually I never need more than a shared hosting, but the unmanaged aged server is an interesting idea.

For digital ocean as example how about the transfer limit? This is the only thing I may be curious about. Does it allow me to run a support forum and portfolio website smoothly without “reaching-the-limit” problem?

I don’t have a lot of experience about this, so it will be great to share your experience about this point.

The $5/mo VPS comes with 1TB monthly bandwidth, which I think is more than enough for most authors here.

I didn’t have experience with unmanaged VPS either but as I previously said, it’s pretty easy to get one up and running. Both DO and Linode have very good tutorials, I’ve used them both when setting up my server. Email server setup is a pain, it would be better if you had a Google Apps account.
