Do you watch TV and does it affect your work?

Hey peoples from around the globe. Since we all do the same work around here i was wondering if you guys watch TV or not and if or how it affects your work.

I don’t watch TV for i think a good 5 years now but sometimes you know i catch a glimpse when other people watch it and sometimes i actually see some awesome work, like from Discovery channel or National Geographic.

So this is a little dilemma maybe, if i watch TV i can get inspired by awesome spots and maybe improve my work, but when i watch TV i am not working and just wasting my time mostly by watching crappy commercials.. those commercials !

Pretty funny that i stopped watching TV since i hated how commercials wasted my time and now i actually make them.. hmm maybe i chose the wrong line of work.. anyway i am getting carried away

Any thoughts? would love to hear em.

Well I also didn’t watch much or any TV at all since I use my pc all the time for work or fun, but everytime I watch TV I tried to get as much inspiration as I can because even if all that is on tv nowadays is pure “reality” crap big tv channels will always have inspiring desings and animations, I personally love watching Discovery Channel and National Geographic.

We also are artist so watching a movie on the TV maybe can bring to you some groundbreaking ideas.

My advice is if you feel like watching some TV then do it, it won’t hurt you and if you do it while you do creative research it will do you good because then you can work with kinda fresh ideas in mind .

It probably depends on what channels you have available, but in my opinion there are so many low production value, badly made, cheap, nasty and cliched material compared to really inspiring and original work that you might as well spend your time somewhere else looking for inspiration (for me its movies and the internet). Bat that just my opinion. Unless you get inspired by all the junk on TV that you think ‘wow, I can make something better than that!’

The biggest thing is also what Felt mentioned, because i sit in front of a screen so much wasting my free time to sit in front of a different screen is just messed up. I do watch some movie/series but i mostly watch them on my pc too so. Guess there aren’t many that get inspired by things they see on tv what i understand. It’s funny really the way we do business. We make stuff for that box and for millions of people but we never actually check that box out ourselves

I just got cable again after turning it off for a year because we NEVER watched television (or commercials). There is soo much utter crap that I can literally find nothing worth watching sometimes. BUT , I do like to channel surf and catch the opening titles of shows (even if the show is stupid) because you never know what they might look like. Discovery always has pretty nice graphics, I actually really like ‘Dual Survival’’s show intro AND the show itself is funny. ESPN has great motion graphics too but I change the channel once they start talking about sportzzz.

I haven’t watched commercial tv for 15 years and I’m one of the most productive people online. I do watch tv series and movies on DVD though (like action movies, concert dvds (shakira, beyonce, pink, p-cat dolls, ac/dc, rush, the police, madonna etc and other fun stuff).

Tip: never watch the news. they should call it the “bad news” because that’s what it is, and is depressing. check cnn.com and drudge once a day plus local news site if you feel compelled, but never watch televised news ever again. I stopped over 15 years ago and I’m much better off for it. I haven’t seen a commercial in over 15 years either. I don’t have cable tv or broadcast tv. I don’t waste my life. And I have a blast.

Kind of like the good point they make in the movie “matrix”; tv is a pacifier for sheeple of the world; instead create your own reality and don’t wander aimlessly watching the commercials and televised bs for the masses. Rise above.
