I am curious to know how designers have been affected personally, directly or indirectly during the last couple of years by the world’s financial problems. They say South Africa is lagging behind the rest of the world, but the worst is yet to come. What do you all think?
In my case, the textile/furniture factory i was freelancing for over 10 years (earning nice royalties) closed last month and i haven’t sold any paintings for a year, so Graphic River is now my only income!
joiaco, This is perfect post mate. I use to work in the last 12 years in/with advertising agencies (the big ones) Year by year the agencies chance to get a project became hard and even strange. If you know what i mean “envelop” then you know what im talking about when i say you needed a fat envelop and an “acceptable” job to win the pitch. After all, you had to follow exactly and give what the clients demanded. if they wanted pink elephant, you had put pink elephant. if they wanted a logo in the half size on the page, you have to do that. And if you told them ok i will do but you tell me also where im gonna place the headline they told me you are the art director, find the solution. Overworks started, un-payed and long nonsense nights. Art directors, Copywriters, Designers became frustrated and exhausted. In 2010 there was an agency i worked. We was not doing monkey business indeed. For example my client was the D(...)e Telecom, Online section. But the way how we worked that was looks like how the monkey’s managing to harvest banana. It was the worst ever in my life. One time, i had to work without sleep without taking a shower or change my cloths 72 hours… Im not joking, seventy two. After this 72 hours which was not payed off course the agency asked me to go and work on the weekend. I said no way… They said if im not going to do this, im not a loyal worker not a team player. o.O ???? And they was talking to me on phone, the management was at home, one of them in a sci-camp. I immediately wrote a resign letter and pick up my staff from the desk. Joiaco, things are worst than ever. Not only here but everywhere. For me Graphic River is also the only income, and i came back to countryside. Now i have chickens, corn and some other stuff. (to be honest chicken are more nice than clients) I never thought before in my life it could happen, but its here right now. I dont know where those people lives or in wich world who keep telling that there is no crisis, or this is just temporary. This is deadly real and i don’t think so this will be solved one day to the next. I dont know where are you live in SA, but if you are in Johannesburg i kindly advice you to think about countryside in the future. At least and until the internet works, the banks and transactions works and more and more people have to buy cheaper and cheaper design. This site could be a good solution. I dont know how long, and i dont know when the time will comes when the people will save their money for food, water, and… bullets. not for design.
Thanks for the feedback dekurvajo, Actually i do live in nature, in a small town suburb, where we grow our own vegetables and have water tanks etc. We don’t require city wages to live. But it’s a bit too natural because we are next to a conservation area and the baboons are always raiding us! And the internet speed is snail’s pace.
That’s an idyllic picture you’ve painted there Jo I think one thing about times getting harder is that more people are turning to Envato for an income, which is good for the marketplaces. But for us authors it will mean competition gets ever tougher.
Yes ToivoMedia, and they will comes. Just watch how many days you need for an acception by the review team. More and more items, more and more authors… This site became successful exactly because of the downgrade budgets everywhere. People are recognized this site and others like this and a low budgets are confirmed and enrolled. Thats also caused serious effects on the freelancers. So what is the next? Freelancers coming here and try to earn money here… I dont know how long it will works. But i think i will need more chicken and corn in the future.
Here in Spain the situation is very difficult.
With more than 4.7million people unemployed (We are 55 million), the rescue of our banks (some days ago) and the word “Corralito” threatening our money savings (Like it was in Argentina)
Some analitycs say that this will been solved in 2016, so we are really screwed up. 4 years in this situation is too much time and we are going downwards.
Of course Envato is a nice and really welcome help right now.
@dekuvajo, speaking of chickens and corn… we got 4 chickens for Christmas from a friend. They were growing nicely until we got raided one night, not by baboons but by a rare water mongoose. So they are also hungry. He killed all 4 chickens inside the koop but only took one of them away. Survival is a tough business when nature is so smart. We have generally forgotten how to live with nature.
We not just forgot Joiaco. We thought WE CAN live without the nature. Or we can rape and burglarize everything from the nature and convert it to money and eat that. Now we see what happening. We wanted a global world with global economy. Just we did not calculated in what if there will be problems will comes and it will be global as well. And this ugly guy called “Problem” has a very annoying behavior. He comes always time by time even we dont want to invite him and knocking on the door. Just an example. The EU has clarified in law what is the procedure for that if a country decide to jump out from the Union. But there is not even a single line about What if a country want to give back the common currency. Hm… Nice huh? When you reading the facts about the oil peak, about the mass unemployed rate in Spain, Greece, those are just nonsense daily news for a lot of people who still lives in a shell. And soon there will be another guys in this club like Ireland, Portugese, Italy. Massive problems in the Middle east, i dont want to open a topic about that if somebody is not blind, somebody who read about a little bit history and understand it as well they know exactly whats happening in this world right now. Not yesterday, not tomorrow right now. If anybody would ask me ok.. And what about tomorrow? I would tell that i dont want to talk about that thing at all…
An interesting topic.
I can only add few important points:
- Take advantage of this great opportunity.
- Learn how to save or invest the money you earn into a lucrative business for future purpose.
- Cherish your progress here and know that nothing last forever.
- The world is changing and we have to change along with it. So be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.
- Invest more time in building your portfolio. Work smart and not hard and leave the rest to God.
I agree with Charles. Since the world is primarily changing especially on the web, it is key to focus time on things that are more important.
I myself have the problem of wasting time alot on social media, and not actually working, lol.
I am trying to get better. Mainly just do the work you love, and day by day you will get better.
Also I have been told by a friend that it is key to have a website, portfolio, or blog. So you may want that, it can help bring in freelance work, traffic, and affiliate commissions
