I think the Envato items protection pattern should be changed, because it is very easy to remove it with photoshop,
take the Casino Icons file by bondyman for example: http://graphicriver.net/item/casino-icons/69991 you can easily save the preview image, load it into photoshop and easily remove the pattern with the ‘Clone Stamp Tool’.

On icons you can use a 50% semi transparent 1px scan line to protect them due to their small nature. For the rest the watermark is being worked on as far as I know, but it’s actually not that easy to remove on some files.
You also need to have a certain balance, if you over do the watermark then sales will drop because you ruin the presentation.

why not load the image in an encrypted swf and display that swf to the user…?? I don’t know how safe the encrypted swfs are but i’m sure that they are safer than to display them directly

true about the watermark but if you purchase the item you will get vector files, not a simple jpeg.

Flat files are often worthless here. You can still print screen a swf right?
