Could this contest be extended also to directory plugins ? I have in mind 2 or 3 codecanyon’s plugins that are complying with many of the requirements.

Do you mean can authors use existing plugins with their directory themes? If so, then yes this is fine.

Hi all, as an agency we have been commissioned recently to build what is in essence another directory site and conducted in depth user experience, tech and development research.

While we can’t provide the full info I thought it might be interesting to share the 3 key features that stood out from the findings for consumers and for providers and maybe inspire some ideas.

From consumer point of view:

‘Profile display’ – many directory sites do not display provide profiles clearly or well making information look cluttered and messy.

‘Provider filtering’ – allowing users to filter down further search results by specific service, area, rating etc. (think how booking.com filters hotels in search results)

‘Search result listing’ – Many directories use a rather ’unappealing’ list of providers and over 85% of people we asked said they would surf the site longer if the results were displayed in a more visually appealing way even if this was just a grid for example. <

From provider point of view:

‘Simplified profile set up’ – A number of users we talked to said that they get confused by ‘over the top’ profile options that result in profiles looking crowded and messy. Suggestions included simplified field entry and tick boxes for provided services etc. (which in turn would translate the front end much better).

‘An option to drop map listings’ – so this would be complicated for a theme on here however what they mean is like www.hassle.com do – where users can search by postcode BUT it does not necessarily display a map allowing for more attention on information and greater privacy for providers (of course this is very dependent on the type of business on offer).

‘ Deeper social integration’ – we know social plays a massive par tin marketing any brand and almost all people we asked wanted deeper ability to sync social profiles and feeds to their profile.

The bottom line of it all was that consumers felt directories were often unattractive and bloated especially the profiles and search results; while providers felt their journey to create appealing profiles were often limited; with overall a real need for attention paid to visual appeal.

Personally I think Astoundify turned a real corner on here with their Marketify theme making it really attractive, easy to use and clean (especially the product pages), and look forward to seeing what authors come up with for this contest.

If anyone wants any more info or ideas on what our research threw up etc. feel free to send me a private message via our profile

For those thinking of creating a WordPress Directory Theme….

1. Allow Bulk Upload

2. Allow “Claimable” Listings

3. Enable Recurring Payments, with MULTIPLE gateways (Authorize.Net, PayPal, Skrill, etc…)

4. The Listings/Profiles must be easily displayed. Don’t cram information into each listing.

5. Offer HOMEPAGE & CATEGORY featured listing options.

6. Allow the listings to be set on RANDOM, Date, Name, etc…

7. Provide consistent updates! DO NOT CREATE A THEME then randomly disappear. We, purchasers of all these directories, have been let down countless times.

I cannot stress enough how important communication and updates are. All these themes run from $55-65, when I would have no problem spending $100 IF the author was to actually provide updates and communicate with their end users.

YES YES YES !!! All of these points are bang on, and I would gladly pay $100 or more for a theme with these features included.

Also STRONG mobile responsiveness and pay attention to FUNCTIONALITY from a mobile point of view. If you are including google maps with listings, think how this is going to be used on a iPhone in portrait and landscape formats. Scrolling past a map on a mobile is a major headache, as the scrolling action simply scrolls the map and not the page!

For those of us that are looking to use these themes as a solution for our clients, it makes more sense for us to pay more for a theme that requires less additional coding as it saves us money and time in the long run.

Some of us burned SpotFinder users were placing bets when you would release something. Thanks, looking forward!

Will the theme server as a city directory with geolocation? Or geared towards vacation rentals more?
