Hi everyone,

I’ve just been thinking…

Every web designer can learn and practice web programming and dedicate his efforts to become a geek in web development field, at least he has a chance.

In the other side not every web developer can gain designing skills and become a designer, because design is a talent, so, developers should focus on expanding their programming knowledge.

Am I right?

As a designer, I’m saying that because I have a passion of being more knowledgeable in the development field. I’m already an HTML and CSS coder with good knowledge in jQuery and wordpress.

What do you think? Should designer/developer each focuses only on his current field, or they’re recommended to go further?

My recommedation: Knowledge is always good, keep learning.

I would say that you should learn everything that you are interested for.

I am an web developer. I tried to design web sites, but i am not so talented, and i don’t have a lot of inspiration. But i like web development and it is interesting to me, so i am sticking to that (also I’m a natural nerd :D ).

But why not learn everything? We have only one life. :)

a web designer should be able to make both, designing and coding…..... if you’re not good at one of them.. you should practice, practice, practice.. that’s my opinion

All things can be improved; including design skills. So I would suggest always learning, whether you’re at one end of the spectrum or the other.

Couple months ago I started to learn HTML /CSS and I found out it was quite easy but then I finally decided to stop coding my stuff and pay someone that really like doing it because I am not patient enough and I can’t do a clean job and resolve all bugs like a real coder do.

I think everybody can code an design .. but your personallity will determine if you are really good at something , and if you are passionate about it .. you will be better than anybody else that is not passionate.

Hot topic :)

IMO , what you’re saying here is being a Jack of all trades…

Yes, you can be good at both. But I’ve yet to see someone really great at web design AND develompent.

To see what I mean…why do you think Collis’ designs are so cool, but then he always lets Derek do the coding? :P

@settysantu: Yes some developers can make good designs, I didn’t say they don’t but what I meant was that proffessional designs those combine professionalism ans visual appealing are made only by designers who are blessed with designing talents, because design is not only learning and practicing, it’s 50% or more a talent.

@DDStudios: Yes it’s good to know the basics, but believe me, HTML and CSS and even jQuery can easily be learnt without a strong passion, they’re easier than what you thought. Just keep practicing and learning, then learn the basics of php, javascript, wordpress, etc..

@digitalimpact: you’re making sense, “Jack of all trades, master of none”. Specializing is good.

Thank you all for contributing :)

I see myself primarily as a designer, but I can also do HTML /CSS, Wordpress theming and some javascript/jquery/php.

For me, while I clearly feel more at home in Photoshop, it can be incredibly relaxing and satisfying to sit down and code something I have designed. Sometimes, the creative juices just won’t flow right and setting your mind on something logical and structured as coding helps me to replenish the energy I need to design.

Additionally, and it has been mentioned here before: I think that every designer should know basic HTML /CSS. Why? Because it will help us to understand that some things we would like to design are simply impossible to code without resorting to a ton of hacks and making a developer cry over IE implementation.
