We could start an expressions thread and see how it goes. It could be a little like the essential resources for authors thread, where we can collect the best entries in the first post.

But I’m not sure that a forum post is the best place for this. We could give it a try.

Expressions can be simple or complicated. You can write long complex expressions too if you want to. You never have to do any low level tasks like memory management…. that’s all dealt with behind the scenes.

The language is ECMA script based, (which means the syntax looks pretty much like Javascript), but it has some After Effects specific commands in there too. The language is a weakly typed object based language.

You could have a look at iExpressions over at aescripts. Or scripts such as Ease and Wizz create expresssions for you.

You can also use the expression pick-whip to make After Effects automatically write expressions for you. If you alt-click the stop-watch for any property, you can then link properties together by dragging with the pick-whip to the expression you want to link to. The code will get written automatically.

It’s worth learning, because there are a lot of things you can do with expressions that take forever to do manually.
