Hey fellow AJ Authors. I love video games, and I know lots of you do too. The new Man Vs. Machine from Valve (new spin on TF2 ) looks sick, and inspired me to post.

What are your favorite video games to play?

Which ones have amazing SFX ?

Which one’s have amazing scores?

I played some Diablo 3 this summer – the SFX are fantastic – the voice acting for the Witchdoctor was done really well too. I’ve been playing some Killing Floor and even some Counter Strike from time to time (pubs are a good place to test your tracks!)

The Half-Life series has had amazing sound design/effects too – looking forward to what they do with the new Man vs. Machine!

In terms of score, Bioshock is still one of my favorites.

IMO , best video game scores, hands down, Koichi Sugiyama’s scores for the Dragon Warrior series back on the old NES .

I don’t really play many video games anymore.

Generally speaking, I think video game music was a lot better back in the golden age of crappy graphics, because it played more of a role – it was one of the main things evoking your imagination. Now, with graphics being so good music has taken more of a background/cinematic role, like with movies…this is fine, but it puts some limitations on what people can do. I think the music to RPG ’s still gets creative, because there’s still a lot of empty space.

Most memorable scores for me come from older Square Enix games. I fell in love with orchestral scores due to composers such as Yoko Shimomura (Chrono Trigger) and Yasunori Mitsuda (Kingdom Hearts). Call it nostalgia. I do love what Marty O’Donnel did with Halo. Tommy Tallaricos score for Advent Rising also remains an all time favorite.

These days most of my game playing is on a tablet or phone lol. Surprisingly, I hardly pay attention to the music in these games.

I have done music and sfx for some PC adventures myself in the past :) Cant talk about its quality but:

Superb game music was on Amiga 500/1200. Turrican2 soundtrack was a masterpiece (amongst many other great pieces).

From PC I must mention music from Baldurs Gate 1+2. Oh and Dead Space music was brilliant and gave the game great great atmosphere!

Machinarium soundtrack is awesome. Love Mirror`s Edge for music. Batman Archam City for common sound design.

Me too – my attention span does not go past the minute it takes to play Fruit Ninja arcade these days.

A while back my favorite game used to be Katamari Damacy. You don’t have to think too much to play it, a round lasts about 5 minutes, and the music is awesome. It’s been years but I can still get the main theme stuck in my head.

For amazing scores I would go for LA Noire, it has these wonderful jazzy sounds throughout the game which I fell in love with (the game wasn’t that good IMHO )
