I was featured. So yeah, no rules :D
You’ve got a black paw, so you probably don’t suck. Don’t be hard on yourself. :P
I don’t but my portfolio does :P

Just saying, work quality or portfolio don’t affect this thing much, I believe it’s more activity in community.

Your theory sounds right; I was featured on AJ and my activity on the community there was better than my portfolio. :D

Envato values the community, which is a good thing. :)

I was featured author on my 5th month in CodeCanyon, I didn’t have much sales and also I wasn’t an active member in the community.

I think they seek for authors that have fresh new items or that recently their items were updated giving new fresh features! but it still a mystery to me since I don’t really know exactly why they chose me.

Also recently 2 of my plugins were chosen to be featured files (on different months of course), and they were new, so that’s why I think they seek for fresh new items.

I noticed that all the featured authors and items I see (ThemeForest & CodeCanyon) have high ratings. Usually 4-5 stars.

My guess is that Envato only features highly rated authors and items in each marketplace. This is one of the reasons why issues with the ratings system is such a problem.

it’s pretty hard to get less than 4 stars in average, I think. Almost everyone is above that, so I wouldn’t say this is the reason people are getting featured.

I’ve been in the monthly top-author list for almost a year until I got featured author. hard to say why they have chosen me at that point, maybe luck, maybe they liked my recent items at that point.

If you are already popular and a top author then you don’t really need to be featured. I think the system is for those that create good stuff but didn’t make it into the very top. This is a way of getting someone noticed (helping them).
