Namaste

At least once a week you can open up Photoshop and try to recreate one of your favorite web designs. Chis Coyer also gave this advice, there is also one interesting comment in this article. This will help you improve your technical speed of work, the flow of transferring ideas into designs.

As usual, I would also suggest to buy the books Don’t Make Me Think and Neuro Web Design – What Makes Them Click. These will help you get a deep understanding of what does and doesn’t work and why, thus helping you make quick decisions.

Here are some good advices for daily training. Also, I’ve always wanted to buy the book Creative Workshop: 80 Challenges to Sharpen Your Design Skills, but still haven’t – the feedback for it is great.

I think you can also work on your English grammar a bit, not that mine is any better.

Have a good day
Boris

Thanks a lot cmt for pointing out great sources , and also webdesignerart for opening this thread ; very helpful ideas from great authors.

From medical point of view, 4 hours is quite enough. I’m sleeping for 4-5 hours and i feel fine… most of the time.

I slept 4 hours last night. I’m up for 8 hours now and i’m sleepy and tired and not productive. Happens every time when i sleep less then i should.

I’m not saying 4 hours isn’t enough, i guess it depends on the quality of the sleep, i don’t sleep very well (need to get a better bed and pillows).

If i’m under deadlines i find it best to sleep 2-3 times per day for 1.5-2 hours. Every time i get sleepy i take a power nap.
But yeah i guess it’s not the same for everyone.. My girlfrined, for an example, is tired after 8 solid hours..

That is actually a very good plan. It works for me too (when I manage to wake up after 2 hours) :)) When I don’t have to worry about deadlines, I just go to sleep, sleep for as much as I can, wake up at whatever hour, work for as much as I can (can be up to 20 hours sometimes, of which about 6-7 are productive, the rest aren’t,but still better than nothing) and then go back to sleep.

What I’m trying to say, is that it’s not really good to undersleep on purpose. Just sleep ENOUGH! Don’t lay in bed all day praying you’ll get 10 more minutes of sleep, but don’t set your ringer after 4 hours of sleep either. What happens to me is that after 3-4 days of 4 hours/night, my eyes hurt like hell (although I’ve checked them and I’m 100% not in need of glasses). That’s why I sleep for as much as I feel is enough, and then work until my body crashes (usually around 5 AM my time).

What helps me is that I sometimes go out for a run between working sessions, or go to shopping or do something else for an hour or two, and that refreshes my brain a bit. As latins used to say:

Mens Sana In Corpore Sano (A healthy mind in a healthy body)

Cheers

You should be sincere with dayjob and discover joy on that! Don’t do occasional damage to regular job even if outside job/activity is ultra awesome :D.

When I worked on a company, observed many guys present their “low level presence” to the office but fix the enthusiasm towards imaginary/dreamy goals that doesn’t matches regular activity. The problem is there is no guarantee whether we can feel the same curiosity after we arrange time for dream job/activity. To be honest, the rule of thumb is to present full enthusiasm even on a dull job – this will take care everything and will avoid getting caught into infinite loop of always being interested in what is NOT being done. :D
