I’m a Fireworks user and now I’m not starting this thread so th TF can support layered png’s instead of psd’s. I have a few questions for FW users if any… When I export my png’s to psd’s some of the details are missing for example the gradient is missing for since I can’t find a way to use the PS Live Effects color change in FW. Also when I use the built in textures in FW they don’t show up in PS? I have to group it in FW which flattens it so that it shows up in PS…

Any Tips besides saying “PS is better” or “Just use PS”...

Thanks guys

I’ve always preferred Fireworks for Web design. Everything you create is natively a vector so it’s very quick and easy to adjust the size and shape of objects. Everything you create also gets added to a new layer automatically which seems to save a lot of time. The Pages and Frames features inside of Fireworks also help me keep an entire Web site comp in the same file which is a tider approach than just layers and layer folders in Photoshop. I also prefer the way Fireworks handles text compared to Photoshop. Just seems a lot quicker and natural to create comps in Fireworks than Photoshop.

For me, Fireworks = Web design and Photoshop = photo and image retouching/manipulation, but it really doesn’t matter what you use because it’s just a matter of preference. Here’s a really good article about designer’s thoughts on Fireworks v Photoshop and it seems like there’s a 50-50 split amongst designers:

Would be great to allow Fireworks PNG format on ThemeForest. GraphicRiver allows Fireworks PNG format by the way. But that said, it does feel like it’s a PSD -centric market these days in the Web industry, so you’d probably get more customers wanting PSD format over Fireworks PNG unfortunately. The problem is, like you said, DigitalHenry, the Fireworks PNG to PSD conversion is not 100% accurate.

I tried it a few weeks ago, didn’t work for me as well as PS did. I started out with FW before PS btw, but I am now so used to PS that I really don’t feel like switching to FW.

off topic: I have a problem in FW. If I select a text field an change the font, and then decide to change it again, when I open the ont drop down, the font list starts from the first font; so it doesn’t stay on the position of the last font chosen. It’s [really annoying, must be a setting or something, but I really can’t find anything. Does anybody know a fix for this? Sorry and sorry for the off topic :)

Do you have to adjust any settings or something different? The native textures and gradients don’t seem to work out of the box when I export them to PS? I am using CS4 for both apps.

When you Save As, check the options button in the bottom right and see what the options say. I have the following:

Settings: Maintain Editability Over Appearance Objects: Convert to Photoshop Layers Effects: Maintain Editability Text: Maintain Editability

I also noticed that it’s better to ungroup objects first before saving

I have those setting not sure why it doesn’t work for me…hmmmm. I only group the objects that are vector simply because they wont show up properly in PS if I don’t. Now I’m curious to know why it doesn’t work for me. Are we talking about the same textures built-in FW not the PS Live Effect ones, correct?
