For the Authors of TF: How much time spent in a Theme?

I’m curious (again) about how much time spent creating a theme the Authors of TF

If you’re starting from scratch and want to create a more complex theme, with a custom options panel, it can take anywhere between 1 to 2 months to get everything running without bugs.

It also depends on how long it takes you to create your design and how fast you can code everything, so if you’re a skilled designer/developer you can get them done much faster.

I have a friend here who’s an elite author. I remember he said the fastest time he could finish a theme is 3 months. He spend more time on designing stage.

As for HTML , it takes me between 2-3 weeks to release a new theme.

We’ve been working on our first theme here for about 3 months, but this includes coding our page builder

A tumblr theme can take me around 2 – 4 weeks. I don’t work constantly on a theme due to client work.

One day maybe. I have 3 girls to support, so TF earnings at the moment are a bonus.

Just to add, some times its hard to be precise with timing, it depends on the complexity of the design or functionality.

Not sure exactly when the clock started, but I spent a year (nights and weekends only) learning WordPress by building a theme from scratch. During that process I learned enough to know what I would and wouldn’t do if I started from scratch again. So I started from scratch after not having looked at it in a few months, and it’s been 4 weeks so far and I am about 25% done with the coding part. I have a very robust framework powering it, and at times I have to dumb things down for WordPress or for PHP 5 .2. I have reinvented the concept of an options panel and documentation, so that has taken more time as well. I expect to be done in October.
