I am looking to build a site for a painter friend with a fairly extensive portfolio. What are the best themes or plugins out there for gallery management? This particular site will have three layers…

1. collection overview – would show one representative from each of the categories. paintings, drawings, photos, etc. with an image featured. It would be best if this could be chosen and not just the most recently added. 2. collection/category – showing all images in the category. It would be best if this could be sorted. The add media tool would work well for this but I would like it to be the focus of the post. Could this be handled with a custom post type? 3. the image

How have others approached this?

I have been reading a bit about next gen gallery but I can’t help but think that this could be solved more simply… Ideas?
