As far as I’ve understood, usually, it is impossible to use game screenshots in themes and even in preview.

But I did some investigation and I would like somebody from envato to confirm my thoughts.

If I wish to use images from Blizzard, they are clear in their policy and they tell that: “images can be used for non commercial purpose only”. So, theme preview is a commercial purpose or no? Also, what in case I make a full functional site for Blizzard funs, based on my theme (it’s not commercial purpose) but will use it’s url as a DEMO site for envato item. Won’t this violate some rules or licenses?

I’m no lawyer, but it sounds like it could be interpreted as commercial use since the screenshots would be used to help sell an item, even if they were not included in the item that the buyers receive.

My advice would be to err on the side of caution, if you are not 100% sure you can use the images with no issues, then don’t. It would stink if your item was rejected because of those images and you had to go back and change them all.

Best places to get images for use in your items is from Royalty-Free websites, I also believe that Envato has some author assets that you can use in your items. You can find the link in the sidebar of your Author Dashboard.

EDIT: I just double checked and there is a boat-load of images you can use in the Assets Library.

Thanks for the opinion glutenfree4u.

I also think that if I’m not 100% sure then it is better to do not use these images.

But the question at all is interesting. I just like the images I could get from their games. Maybe I’m not alone who is interesting in the staff reply.

Here is a bit of an older thread about this topic: http://themeforest.net/forums/thread/copyright-question-for-gaming-screenshots-and-pictures/13813

This one has some staff replies and the answers your looking for, I believe.

Good luck with your theme!
