The earth is a spheroid. Flattening it onto a two dimensional map distorts the areas closer to the poles, making those land masses seem much larger than they are in reality.

Normally, lines of longitude converge at the poles; on a map, they remain parallel, so clearly they are much more spread out the closer you get to the pole.

relics from the colonial age still going strong (was intentional and still is). maps were made to show the “importance” of the “civilized” world upon the rest of the “savage/primitive” world.
