And Antarctica is bigger than Eurasia? WTF really
It’s not Google’s fault (this time) it’s down to map projection, it stretches areas at the north and south more than the central areas.
The earth is a spheroid. Flattening it onto a two dimensional map distorts the areas closer to the poles, making those land masses seem much larger than they are in reality.
Normally, lines of longitude converge at the poles; on a map, they remain parallel, so clearly they are much more spread out the closer you get to the pole.
Closer to reality:
already explained, check out the peters map, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gall–Peters_projection
For those interested in this matter, read about Buckminster Fuller studies, half past century. It’s pretty interesting to see other kind of earth representation, it could change minds and opinions.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dymaxion_map
Look at the comparation (for example) between Europe and South America, both in this map and the default one we are used to see and think with.
relics from the colonial age still going strong (was intentional and still is). maps were made to show the “importance” of the “civilized” world upon the rest of the “savage/primitive” world.
Note that Africa is “huge” comparing with Europe
