So for the future, how can we protect ourselves? Is it the Paypal who finds out that the payment is unauthorized? Because if yes, then we can protect ourselves by waiting, for example client pays for the job and I’ll wait one day to see if the payment is authorized.

no it’s mostly the client who claims an unauthorized access to its paypal.

Hmm.. How much do you know about this client? His website? His Facebook? Or maybe his Envato account?

Been in the same position, it isn’t nice.

To make sure you get the money you need to provide, paper trail, signed contract, link to finished work, description of what work was done, confirmation by the client it was done (An email or something)

But what protects us authors from this type of cases…

Never ever never ever start a project with a new online client without having charged 50% in advance. Charge 50% rest while you have sent the final source files. This way both sides will need to trust on each other.

If the work is js driven, try to use some protection functionality (timestamp or server path restriction) while sending dev samples.

I had been in this situation once. It was some months after the project had been closed. However, fortunately it turned out to be an error from the customer’s bank that triggered the PayPal system, and I was lucky that the customer was nice and helped me get through that.

PayPal do not offer protection for seller with intangible goods, and because it’s not in their policy, whatever we try to prove would not work with them. In my case, not only did PayPal remove the transaction dispute amount from my balance, they also charge me the fee for handling the charge-back case, which is unbelievable.

Hi Protest, i’m not sure how are you familiar with PayPal interface, maybe i have a solution for you for further relations between you and clients. Please email me for details, this feature is integrated inside PayPal and there is no extra costs.
