GPL Results

Just to let people know, as I thought it was odd it wasn’t mentioned here where all the original discussion came from, but the results are now in for the GPL poll amongst authors, as I am sure many are like me and do not visit the notes site that often (I actually saw the results in an article on WP Daily – which is kinda odd before being announced on the forums), here is the link:

I would like clarification however on what the option to authors will be, is this all your items if you choose or on a per-item basis please?

yes you are right most of us are not visiting the notes , so thank you for sharing this one. To us it sounds like the whole system is category driven. So if you decide to place one of your items inside the GPL category it will be 100% GPL otherwise its split licensed. But still not sure about it.

Thanks for the pick up and post on the Forums. I posted up on Notes this morning and then let John/WPDaily know – and boy he cranked out a post fast!! I guess that’s the news business

In regards to your question, my gut feel is it would be per-item, so authors have flexibility. That said the team is now just starting the technical assessment of how we will implement, so I’ll need to come back to you later in March.

Hey UT, definitely won’t be category driven, as it will be an optional choice for each author, and most likely on a per-item basis. Hope that clarifies!

hmm… flexibility? it is a new criteria here. What about years of silence for the same option on Extended license. EL had varying level of price across different categories (3x, 10x, 50x etc). Authors had no way other than either fully opt-in for all categories/marketplaces or just stay away from Extended. There was a time when Extended License was unclear and nightmare for many of us – there was no way other than just opt-out with personal loss (per item option could have solved part of the impact).

So by the time per-item choice available for GPL, can we expect the same choice will be available also for Extended License?

And any news about developer license? isn’t that also a part of CodeCanyon survey?

Surprised by the results but kudos to Collis and Envato for deciding to offer a GPL option based on the survey. And I especially appreciate that it will be optional
