I don’t believe that the average buyer has an idea of what GPL is or that it does matter for him.. Because the GPL thing came from wp.org not from the buyers..
Actually I’m pretty sure the average buyer simply doesn’t care about licenses and doesn’t read them, he/she wants to buy theme and setup a website, that’s all.

Agreed. Not only that, but others are making the argument that distributing of the themes will occur. Sure, it will, but it happens already. People do what they want with the themes regardless of the license. And the buyers who buy a license for each site they use it on will also still do that because its the right thing to do, again, regardless of the license.

It’s not going to matter much for ThemeForest themes that offer something unique. It is going to matter a for plugins though. CC authors get requests for developers license all the time so the minute buyers pick on the fact that “Full GPL = Developer’s License” it’s going to have an impact.

Then the price for the plugin should be 25x-50x and i’m sure you’ll be ok with that! I would buy a plugin to use in my themes with that price..

What if Envato takes it as competitive advantage and allows with same price or just 5x? from the past experiences, Envato is prone to lock doors either in the form of options or price to stay competitive.

Someone who purchases 25x as full GPL most probably prefer to distribute. Some who purchases 10x as developer license will most probably won’t distribute. The later case is more efficient than former one in terms of copyright holder’s / creators preference and protection; and even economical from a typical CC buyer point of view.

Yeah, you’re right.. Full GPL is a bad idea in every aspect of it! :)

^ The problem is not just with full GPL thing. It is with not having few more own licenses on Envato that covers part of benefits available in GPL as well as works comfortable for author and buyer. Even before the WordCamp issue, lack of more license option used to be an issue (for authors and buyers) – just no much of attention before.

I like how you’ve taken this full circle 8-) You’re right, we need a developers license now more than ever to offset the GPL effect.
