HTML 5 and by using Adobe Edge you can create HTML5 animations easily just like in flash.
Yeah, that’s a nice joke. Let’s say it comes close to what you could do with Flash about 15 years ago.

Looking forward to the day people will stop using HTML5 as a term for everything. It’s a freaking markup language, nothing more, nothing less.

If you meant to ask FLASH or JS/CSS3, I think it really depends on your goals, but for most cases, yeah, the latter; just because of mobile users.

(and yeah, flashedge is right)

Even I don’t know what kind of animation you’re talking about, and don’t have a clue about the percent your potential customers’ using IOS devices, I would say Flash is still the king when it comes to animation.

Flash is also absolutely still going strong especially in educational areas.

And it is really unbelievable to see everybody want to display every website in mobile devices, please don’t understand me wrong, I know it is all about demand and we all have families to take care of, but why to imprison such beautiful pieces of art (at least a few of them really are art) to such small screens that every website absolutely looks like each other. Unbelievable.

As I have said, just thinking loud, it is all about demand.

I almost forgot, thanks a lot Adobe!

I am no Microsoft hater but this is one reason I am mad at them. Microsoft is trying to do so many stuff that they end up messing things up. I think they should concentrate on their OS mostly and stay away from trying to mimic everything. Seriously, what was the point of SilverLight when we had Java and Flash…

Microsoft has been going downhill for me as well. One only has to look back at their track record of building developer products for the past 10 years, products that never stick.

VB.NET for c#, Webforms/winforms abandoned for WPF/Silverlight and ASP.NET MVC. Now WINRT but fear not, you can still reuse some of your WPF and Silverlight skills. WP7/WP8 ? All done at the expense of the developer. IMO there is just too much uncertainty for developers in all these products and it’s a vicious cycle.

Windows 7 to 8 is a huge shift as well. Now we’re hearing rumors of Windows Blue. It’s tough being a developer in the Microsoft stack :)

If mobile, then pick Android or Apple and then dive into App Development for that specific choice. HTML5 might be good for simple effects but I really doubt it’s the way to choose for advanced stuff like games, regardless of your aim of PC or Mobile.

Well, you may be right. The current trend is to write native apps as opposed to html5, so there is quite a bit of fragmentation there. Rule of thumb is to go with what floats your boat, which appears to be what everybody is doing.

:D Your point is valid however CSS and JS need HTML to exist. JS needs objects to animate or draw onto, CSS needs objects to style. If we really wanted to be precise we would have to write HTML5+CSS3+JS which is long for everyone :)
