Hi, I was wondering if anybody could suggest what I can do about my blog?

I am presently hosting with Hostgator, I have been very happy with them until recently.

Almost every time I make a post they shut down my blog! I am sure that this is due to a ‘slight’ surge in traffic. They tell me that I am causing them a high load on their server. They then suggest that I enable “Database Cache” and “Object Cache” in the plug-ins settings for Wp-Total Cache. This has already been done…

What should I do? Help!

How much traffic does your blog get per month (unique visitors, pageviews, hits)? It sounds like you have outgrown your hosting plan. I assume it is bargain shared hosting (~$5-$10/mo). These plans typically cram as many sites as possible onto a single server, which pulls double duty as web and database server. Check your wp-config, and if your database setting says localhost, you need to upgrade.

I currently use rackspace cloud sites and cloud servers, but that might be overkill for you. My current setup includes cloud load balancers, 2 varnish cache servers, 2 app servers running WordPress, and 2 database servers in a 2 way replication cluster, with all static content served from Amazon Cloudfront.

If you don’t need all of that, or if server administration isn’t your thing, Look into a VPS or something from Media Temple as the next step. These run about $19-$50 per month, and you get a slice of a server all to yourself.

Many thanks for your help. I have contacted Media Temple and I am going for a VPS . Is a blog easy to transfer over there? I’m a bit nervous about it!

It’s pretty easy to migrate a blog. Just do a full dump of the database and copy all of the files over FTP . On the new host, just copy over all the files and import the database.

It’s a tool to do an export of a database. You will most likely be using a web based tool like PHPMyAdmin though.
