(Locked) How can I copy and paste transform coordinates in PS?

hi all,

quick question as I don’t even know if this is possible at all. If I have a folder, a smart object, a shape, anything I can’t just copy and paste into another document and I want to insert it in the exact same place in another document of the same dimensions how would I go about that?

Or if I have two identical documents and I want to change the position of an element in one, then do the exact same to a similar element in the other?

I would have thought that must be some way to copy the exact coordinates of the object, whatever it may be.

What I do at the moment is ctrl+t and then copy and paste the X and Y coordinates. But that gets tedious if you have to do it repeatedly as I play around with different versions of the same design.

Is there no way to copy and paste transform values in the same way as we can e.g. layer styles?

Any tips?

To answer my own question, I finally got a helpful tip, and couldn’t be easier:

When you drag one element from one file into another simply hold down shift. It then gets dropped in exactly the same place.

You have no idea how many times I’ve wanted to do something like that… haha

All I had to do was hold down Shift!! >.<

Thanks for sharing. I used to solve these situations in a crazy way; by filling a new layer at bottom with same size as canvas, link all the layers, drag them to new psd, snap the bottom layer to top-left (all together) and finally delete the bottom layer, phew!

Or easier method: right-click your layer, choose “Duplicate layer”, pop-up window with options should appear. There you’ll be able to choose a document to which the layer should be copied, choose another document. If it’s canvas is the same size the layer will sit exactly in the same place as in original document.

Phew, just made it in time before the end of the year then!

One limitation I found is that it Does not seem to work on folders, only individual layers/objects. So when you want to move an entire folder with subfolders you need to convert a smart object first or flatten and first.

That a pity! And definitely something to keep in mind when you’re starting next files and plan on dragging things around
