I run a custom version of Windows XP that only consumes ~200MB of RAM with IE6 -8 running, several hours of uptime and one page loaded per IE instance (no need to use tabs).

Is it possible to set up this stripped down version with a standard XP install disk, or is there more involved?

Possibly, I’m not sure. On OS X I just install it in Parallels via disk image.

I also use paralells and have it hooked up to MAMP and such. It has been great. I also have a windows machine at home that I test on.

I use VirtualBox, to run Windows XP and IETester. One small note though, if you’re debugging/testing WordPress, don’t set ‘http://localhost/myblog’ as your blog’s address, set it to your local network address (something like ‘http://10.0.0.5/myblog’). On your Windows machine http://localhost won’t be recognized.

Same here – VirtualBox has a super small footprint on my Win 7 box with a old golden oldy – XP Home with IE 7 (and every other browser). I’ve found it to be the best environment on a win host machine for testing. Much better than vmware server/workstation by far imho…
