xstortionist saidIt still says this in the referral guide:
Enabled saidNow it’s really confusing.
Hmmm…. it means things changed. I remember that it was only available for a 3 month period. PS. I’ve edited the topic title. It was confusing.![]()
If a person clicks a link, they have three months before the cookie expires. If they sign-up and purchase in that three months, then you earn the commission
I think there’s a typo though.

For me the last registered member was in July yet I get a deposit in December. I think it works just like Dzinc said, if a member registers then whenever they deposit, you get a commission regardless of time. The three months limit applies when the user clicks the referral link but do not register immediately. Then they must register within three months for the referral link to work otherwise the cookie expires.

I just went and did a code read-through of our referrals system (it’s last been significantly changed around 3 years ago) and so no one could remember off the top of their head what it does.
So here’s a quick summary.
If a user arrives at the site without a referral cookie set and also without a referral code in the url, we set a special blank referral to say “Hey this guy arrived of his own volition and no one gets paid”.
If they arrive through a referral link, then we set a referral cookie that lasts for 3 months. If that user signs up in that three months, their account is permanently linked to the account that referred them. If they take 2 years to spend money with us, the referring user will still earn the commission. The referral commission will be payed out at whatever the percentage is at the time of the deposit, not at the time of visiting the site the first time, or when they sign up.
I hope that clears everything up.

Thanks for the clarification, John! There’s no way it could be interpreted in more than one way anymore now

Hey John,
Does a referral link set a cookie that overwrites the cookie you mention above?
To put it simple, is this still in place?
If you have visited one of the Envato Marketplaces before and then click a referral link, it doesn’t count

No it doesn’t overwrite it.
The point of the “you visited on your own” cookie is to restrict referral payments to only when you send us brand new customers that have never seen us before.

Thanks John! If you could shed some light on another question we all would love to know!
Are refferral links key sensitive to the username? ref=”Enabled” or ref=”enabled” or do both work?
They are case insensitive. Both will work.
