oooo good question! All depends on my level of inspiration. Sometimes it goes so smoothly. When I designed FreelanceSwitch back like a year ago, all the PSD work was done in about 6 hours and I was on to the build.

Sometimes though it takes days and then I still hate the design :-) My first attempt at the FlashDen blog was like that, it was really bad (no-one ever saw it happily). Event after lots of work, it still sucked.

Oh well, you win some you lose some!

How long do you take?

I’m still logging in hours on my first theme..;) Just kidding, I have done lots of modifications but never built from scratch. My strengths lie in graphic design over coding, I signed up to push myself to start building my own. No better motivator than money..right?

How about everyone else?

:-) Yeah, nothing like jumping in the deep end to really get going. I used to send theme coding to PSD2HTML until I got grumpy at paying extra money and decided to try doing it myself!

Well I happen to be exactly the opposite, coding is my mains skill and I can do it fast.

But design really can take me a long time, sometimes I am lucky though and come up with something I like fairly quickly

Depending on the design..if it’s only a simple website(like the two ones that are already on ThemeForest) it takes up to one day(6-8 hrs)
The coding takes me about 4 hrs …

It depends. Sometimes I got the idea and work on it until it is done, this can take whole day, or even night too, but all design will be done in 24 hour. Sometimes it can take more then month (if you not depend on time), when you got no inspiration, or project specification about design lock you in small room without no space to creative fly!

Forever.. :( my problem is I’m my biggest critic and I won’t let anyone see what I’ve done until it’s perfect.

It really changes each time. Sometimes I can get a whole design (plus code) out in ~10hours. Others, like one I’m working on now, I’m never happy with and am constantly changing things round.

To be fair, I think I’m more of a code-guy. While I can make good looking designs, it takes me a good while before I’m anywhere near happy with it :)

designing the theme is far more easier than coding the theme. if you got that moment of inspiration a design shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours whilst the coding can take up to 3-4 days depending on the complexity and the features required. so overall i think it’s kind of relative thing how much it takes :P
