I want to ask something.

I have customers who stayed at the Cape Town South Africa, and she said she was hard to send money to me … because in his country so many rules that are very difficult to send money to other countries via bank transfer.

Is that correct?

Since it was 2 months I have not been able to accept payment from him.

I recommend payment via paypal, but until now there has been no response from him.

South Africans can make international payments via PayPal or Skrill (Moneybookers). One of the South African Banks called FNB (First National Bank) also allows South Africans to accept PayPal payments.

In order to make a payment, your client just has to open a PayPal or Skrill account and load funds into the account – this can take a few days. If it is a larger amount then you can get your client to make an SWIFT transfer. For really large amounts it is also a good idea to consider an Escrow service.

If your client is genuinely experiencing problems it could be due to the fact that PayPal used to debit the person’s account with $1 (to make sure it was a legitimate account) and then the person would need to wait for their bank statement to use the code from the PayPal debit, before their PayPal account could be activated.

I think the ‘activation’ of a PayPal account at the moment only requires the person to have a valid South African Bank account.

That being said, If your client is avoiding you, or not responding, it is usually a sign that they probably don’t intend to pay.

I live not too far from Cape Town and speak from first hand experience about the difficulty of receiving payments into this country; so much so that i had to ask a client to reverse a payment from UK, and ended up having to PAY THE CLIENT WHAT HE OWED ME !!! (in costs!). My bank account was not with FNB so i could not receive money into it. To open another account is very expensive, because you have to have the basic deposit and then pay all the monthly and annual fees (apparently the highest in the world?) even if you just get one payment. PayPal is expensive anyway. So yes, it is a mission to make and receive payments here. The red tape as regards exchange control is a nightmare, mainly (from what i have experienced) because of inefficient data capturing. Thank goodness i have relatives outside SA who can assist me.

I have had no problem sending money outside of South Africa because i have a credit card and PayPal just deducts and pays immediately. But getting a credit card required months and months of security checks and multiple proofs of identity. If you don’t have a credit card then you have to go into the bank personally and fill in the required paperwork. The security on exchange control is so tight now that maybe this is what your client is talking about. If he has not got all his identity documents, telephone details, proof of home address etc. then the bank won’t let him do anything.

I actually recommend payment via swift transfer, but my clients say that they have difficulty making a payment through swift transfer, the reason is because the government there is very difficult for them to make payments via bank transfer.

If they already owe you money, then send a formal invoice for work done so far, then you can get legal after that. If they don’t actually have anything from you yet, then you may have to count this as a bad experience. Do you have any contacts in South Africa who could assist you to contact them from inside South Africa? That often gives a kick into action!

I just email it to communicate with him. Actually, my clients are in South Africa in from the U.S. .. and he lived in South Africa because he had business there.

Maybe he could not pay me. And my mistake was I did not ask for payment first half of him, because I think he has often asked me to work on her project. And this is also the first time I experienced this.

I think it’s become my experience for later in the future.
