I think the better solution would be to raise file prices. Just my 2 cents. ;)

If Envato raised commission rates would that encourage authors to work harder? I doubt it, earning money becomes easier. Keeping the rates lower would encourage authors to work harder to reach their goals – my 2 cents.

@siredesigns – if you can earn enough to survive each month with your envato earnings take the plunge, imagine how much you could make working the marketplace for a living? lifes to short to wonder ‘What if?’.

I would work on my Envato files full time 100% if I earnt enough each month to cover bills, rent, car, etc. Unfortunately I don’t at the moment but it goes up each month! :)

I would have to live in a cardboard box, but that’s a sacrifice worth making!

But you wouldn’t have electricity or an internet connection! Unless you pimp your cardboard box! ;)

Economics:

Envato gives 30% affiliate commission. This means 75% author rates are impossible. They’d be losing 5% each time an author refer someone to buy his file. I’ll then game the system, and make 5% on each click.

Now for the full time job, it really depends. I live in Tunisia, a software developer salary is $500. Last month, I made $504. This means, I don’t need to work as a full time employee. Envato is already making me good money.

For someone living in the States (assume SF), you’‘ll need at least $5000 to break even. This means selling, working, marketing, learning… 10 times more than I did. And it took me 1.5 years to achieve this.

So if you want to do it, leave your job, spend something like 6 months working hard on the marketplace and it’ll pay off. Certainly, if you have a family, your situation will be different, and taking risks with your kids is not an option.

?? Strange reasoning. Something is not working here. ;)

Dont think I ever will go full time with Envato, it is mainly a bit of fun , for example all my 3d work are one I have had on my computer for years and never got round to doing anything with. but when I get a 3d freelance jobs they can range from $3500 – $15000 that just would never work on 3d ocean. there always so specialist they will only appeal to a very limited audience

with graphics river I only make what I feel like I don’t make items because I think they will sell well, I just do it to keep up practice in each of the disciplines I do as I don’t use photoshop for as much design as I would like, I spend most time 3d modelling and working on special effects for film.

Then my full time job pay is too good, and with the freelance compared to envato earning, and I would need so many sales a few hundred a day.

+1 for this one.

35$ Fully-featured and flexible wp themes, or 15$ HTML websites … it’s quite a pity…

At least 45$ for wp and 20 for HTML would get people more interested.

If i have a file that costs $100 i would get $75 from the sale. If i would create a fake account and be referred by me, after spending $100 on my file, i would get $30 from the referrals. So that’s $100 invested and a profit of $5.. If i would do this 100 times i would get $500 for nothing :D
