Preview images are incredibly important The more time I spend the better the item normally turns out. If you spend alot of time, thats ok. It can only benefit the item!

Preview image is the first thing a potential buyer will notice. So definitely it HAS to be made with due care. I say take time. Take enough time to understand your product and extract the best out of it and showcase it. I spent 3 hours making 5-6 preview images, screenshots and animated gifs.
