If someone ask you to create a premium WP theme for them for re-distribution. How are you going to charge? A normal web design rate? Or any additional terms?

The client is a hosting company for WP host.

If there is no marketplace like TF, I think I will just charge like usual ( maybe with some extra condition ). But with TF, it makes me think twice. Because they full own that and they will resell it. Not like normal client, they just use it for their company or personal sites.

Anyone mind to share their thoughts? :)

I’m actually working on a theme right now for a client of one of the top theme providers out there. What he’s doing is offering a nice amount for only requiring 1 page, plus a page which includes all elements. Their team will do the rest to construct other pages and develop the theme.

However, I simply treat it as a normal freelance project. I don’t see any reason to get extra payment for every sale or anything like that. If you want to get paid for every sale, then you should host it yourself (or put it on TF).

Just quote it at what you think it’s worth. Over time we’ve earned around $8k from our 1 theme, but if you do a theme as freelance then you get paid full once completed, so it balances out in a way.

Here is my thought.

I think they will offer for their clients (bundle with their hosting package) with extra charge.

The question is how many they have (or will potentially have in next 1-3 years). If you can estimate this numbers then you will know approximately how much you will get.

So Compare this with normal project amount.

Hope this help ;)

Thanks for the inputs :)

@Monfify: But this client require a full theme, not just 1 page. So, if I understand what you said, I should quote it around $8k (in your case) ? Mind to send me an email and let me know about the ‘nice amount’? Just to get a reference.

@Peerapong: I think I am ok if they bundle with their hosting package, but if they charge extra for having custom themes, I think I should charge more. I think that make more sense.

you can use like example the artworks done for books for instance. the full rights are quite never sold (except the price is ok). the rights are sold for a certain number of books. if the book sell good, will be another contract for another number of copies and so on.

And he wants you to develop it, and also include different options? I mean, it all depends on how much he wants. If someone were to contract me to fully develop a theme, I’d quote between $5,000 and $7,000 depending on the amount of features, options, pages, etc.

I sent you an e-mail with the price

Kailoon, I don’t think that you should charge extra just because you think they will make some money out of your theme.

As a freelancer you have your hourly rate or project based flat price which should satisfy you.

I dont wish to be skeptic but… I dont see how anyone would pay such a price if they could have it done for a fraction of that amount. If such a project would be posted at freelancer.com, they would quote it around $500 – $1000. They wouldnt mind giving out the rights aswell.
