Huge images sizes and photography themes?

Something that confuses me is that a lot of photpgraphy themes, for example full screen theme, use very large images. Eg, one I looked at was 400k…and that was just one image as part of the background that constantly changed! Are the servers that the theme demos on particularly fast? Im worried that if I buy a theme like this, my little web server will just cause a very slow, sluggish website. Or am I under estimating the average user’s internet speed? Is 400k an acceptable size for web images? Because Ive been aiming for under 100k!

Well 400 is indeed high and might leed to lag on some servers. The smaller the better.
