Let’s say you (Jon, Maria, Bob or whatever) buy a product here on Themeforest because it looks really good, the demo is nice and it has enough stars ratings…

But after you buy it you start your work with it and you start to have really functionality and code problems… You contact the author but he doesn’t give a crap so… what can you do? How can you warn the other potential buyers that the code is NOT top notch and the censorship on Themeforest works grate so you can’t just start saying “Don’t buy X Theme from X Author… “

... so what can you do? Do you start buying from other marketplaces?

Hi bobural,

first of all, support is not a necessity here, which should be clear when you take a look at the prices.

But, of course, the item should be working as advertised. To give your feedback, we have the comments section and the star ratings. Also, in case that a file/code/theme is broken, you can always contact envato support (support.envato.com) and they will do further investigations.

But then, you said the item in question has a lot of good ratings, which of course means that there are a lot of happy buyers here. And you should always bear in mind that the problem could be on your site and not with the theme. Also, every item that gets approved on themeforest or any other marketplace gets reviewed by professionals, that check the item for problems, bugs and compatibility problems.

I hope that clears everything up a bit.

Hi Bobural,

I agree with Creattive. If you feel that the theme is not working as it’s advertised and have contacted to the author but he/she didn’t help you. You should contact the Envato Support.

But if a theme has so much good stars and you see that this is only you that have problem with it, Maybe there is something wrong on your web server or other plugins. In this situation I think it’s not fair to put a comment and tell others that “Don’t buy X Theme from X Author… “. Because if it was a bad item, other users won’t give it good ratings…

Anyway, I wish you to be able to fix the issues with the author and the item you’ve bought.

Also if an item is not working as advertised you can ask Envato Support for a refund, but as Creattive said make sure you double check everything because if an item as lots of sales and positive ratings there may be some other problems. :)

If you contact to the Envato support, they will re-check the item and disable it (If they found the same problem that you are reporting) until he/she fixes the issues.

as other authors have already pointed out, when an item has a lot sales, a lot good ratings, it most probably DOES WORK.

I can understand your frustration when you pay for something and it doesn’t work as expected. But also, there are many variables that play a role here, your webserver configurations, your plugins used and so on.

It should not be your top priority to warn others about this item, even if you feel that this code is broken. Contact support and they will investigate if there in fact is a problem with the code. If it turns out you are right, the item gets disabled from the marketplaces. Also, you should get your money refunded.

But right now, as it is not clear what exactly is the problem and it looks like there are many happy buyers, it wouldn’t be fair to try to cut down the authors sales on that item.

I do see what you mean but as the others said the best way is to contact support and they will review or pull the file again. I know you want to pre learn others but the way it works is (while not ideal) the only logically fair route for now that ensures the whole marketplace demonstrates mutual respect between buyers and authors.

For example (without going off thread) the current rating system has its flaws and we see some obvious mis use. To allow openly public reviews/warnings on here would create a similar issue. At the end of the day (not aimed at anyone in particular) the vast majority of buyers on here are not experienced enough to really judge the quality of code, irrelevant of the subjective view on the matter as well, and as was raised earlier (again not case specific) the problem could have zero to do with the author and their theme.

I am sure envato is looking at their processes on reviews and rating but for now what they do works to protect both parties as much as possible.

In this situation, I would write a comment on the product page. But it shouldn’t be in this format:

Don’t buy X Theme from X Author…... “

Rather use:

My experience with this product was:
- nice features
- etc some other positive feedback

Still I had some issues with it:
- code not looking good
- is not working with IE10 as described
- conflicts with plugin X
- etc

A feedback should be very specific and impersonal and the comment should describe exactly why you say that the product does not work as described….. Then, it will not be deleted from the comments section. And the customer are warned. Most probably in this case, the author will respond too.
