rant start

they should just prevent spam/bot from submitting forms, not me!

i’d like to get the inventor of one of those multi colored, variable background, rotated, case sensitive captchas out there and tie his right hand on a table.

now, mister “no bot beats me”, you type it correctly or i’m gonna cut you a finger each time you mistake….

rant end

And each time the guy types and sweatingly hovers his finger above the Enter button you breath in his neck “ARE YOU SURE ?? VERY SURE ? YOU SURE YOU READ IT CORRECTLY ? REMEMBER YOU ’RE BETTING A FINGER ” and then keep a ticking stopwatch in the corner of his vision for some extra pressure ;)

And the worst of it is the people who they are most concerned about are breaking the capchas anyway using human computation ( the second method is quite creative :) )

I’m amazed how recaptcha works. It uses us to recognize scanned document parts. And it’s fairly easy to read. It works with 2 words, one of which is already in the system this is the control word, and the other, the messier word is the one you input for the greater good (afaik they are digitizing new york times and such). If you make an error in the messier word, they might not notice and let you through. I experimented this when I was toying with lockerz but eventually realized I’m better off working :D Point is that every site should use recaptcha, because it’s readable and it doesn’t waste our time that much.

I couldn’t agree more!

Here’s a few quick reasons why people don’t seem to use it as widely, though; 1) It generally doesn’t fit the page’s layout in type of colour or style. 2) It’s quite big for a captcha, and leaving you not much options to rearrange the field for example. 3) People just like to re-invent the wheel. :P

It has a theming API

Can’t solve that one! ;)

Google’s captcha is one of the most horrible :) (When you set up a new email acc for example.)
