I was with Bluehost who let you buy one hosting account and add ‘add on domains’ and thus host many websites without redirection or masking etc, it’s as if you have a seperate hosting account for each website. The trouble is they are idiots and so I need another host that offers the same service, any recommendations?

I’m not 100% sure of your question. Are you wanting a host which allows separate user directories per domain? (eg, when you ftp you only have directory permissions for the current user)

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. You get what you pay for. I got sick of crappy, unreliable web hosts several years ago after trying host after host and having one issue or another. I bucked up an snagged a VPS with ServInt.net and I’ve never looked back. Very, very happy with their service. Sure, I pay $49/m but the service is killer and I never have to worry about my client’s sites going down. I also resell hosting to friends, family and clients and haven’t had anyone complain about downtime. :)

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

I had a lot of hosts most of them crapy stuff. I now use mediatemple.

@ Gareth_Gillman: Well you dont know for what he’s using a host, if he’s got a hightraffic site that has a lot of visitors from the usa, than he better could get an server thats located in the usa.

I agree Mark but as he is UK based, it would be far easier to contact a UK host than an american host if something goes wrong.

Trust me it’s a pain, I had to contact an american host for a client and it’s an awful experience.

It’s down to what he wants more, support or price. US hosts are generally cheaper than UK alternatives but the support is generally better and easier with a UK host.

Dreamhost are the best. 24 Hour support and live chat.

It’s better to use a US host as it’s cheaper in the long run – $ is better than £.

My first ever host was streamline.net and I was seriously doomed with them, no one-click installs, hosting was costly and but it’s features, bandwidth and web space were crap.

Support was ridiculous, quickest reply was 5 days!!!

Conclusion:

Dreamhost knocks em all out!

Host unlimited domains without bursting the server. I host 50+ domains.. 99% of domains were purchased elsewhere.. just forward your nameserver.

Best thing is.. if you buy a domain with limedomains now… forward the nameserver to dreamhost, you can actually start using the website in the next hour. Utterly the most quickest nameserver change I’ve ever experienced – usually takes 2-3 days.

Mediatemple are good. But don’t really recommend them. You need to change a directory name at the beginning to install wordpress. It’s too much hassle.. where as dreamhost gets you up and running in 3 clicks.

1. Add Domain

2. One-Click Install e.g wordpress

3. Harness your blogging powers!

Nothing more needed to be said.

I use Dreamhost myself for most sites. Quite happy with them, but I wouldn’t say they are without problems. They are fairly cheap, but probably the best of the cheap that I know of. If you want higher reliability and professionalism I’d recommend Media Temple.
