Looking at the top menu we have eCommerce, when it drops down we have WooCommerce listed – all fine.

If however you click eCommerce and look in the right panel there’s no WooCommerce shown?? Also none of the WooCommerce themes are shown in the eCommerce listings either.

Surely this isn’t correct?

Yes I understand that but then why list under eCommerce at the top :) once you click it’s not there – therefore it’s not classed as commerce… doesn’t make sense.

Same situation for the other plugins:

  • VirtueMart
  • WP e-Commerce
  • WooCommerce
  • Jigoshop
  • Cart66
  • Ubercart
  • Drupal Commerce

The entire last 7 items in the menu actually are not there. My guess would be that in the actual structure of the categories hierarchy these don’t exist under “eCommerce” and so they don’t show in that area. It’s easy enough to put them all in a menu, but where the data structure as defined in the system takes over for the following screen it’s less simple to force those “pseudo categories” into the page. Just a guess.

Yup I believe I follow exactly what you are saying – it’s basically wrong and needs attention – it’s bad enough that search isn’t great but when menu systems and hierarchy are off we really are confusing users and not helping them find items and products.

Looks like the sidebar is the actual item classification, and an item cannot be in more than one category. The top navigation is therefore a pseudo-classification and for the purposes of linking can break this rule, but the content and destination URLs do not. A common reason for that is providing duplicate content at different URLs is punishable in SEO.

It is illogical, but since these were obviously not built in unison I can’t imagine it’s going to change quickly.

Off topic, but jonathan01’s and Parallelus’ avatars remind me of women that show up to a party wearing the same dress.

That b*tch!

Only kidding. Jonathan and I go back a ways being veteran ThemeForesters. Neither of us can see any similarity in our logos. None at all. :D
