You will need PHP for WP development but I would suggest starting with the basics so HTML, CSS and then Javascript. This is a much less steep learning curve than jumping straight to WordPress, you can still sell HTML templates on here and will help when you refine your skills and move on

I don’t know it but take a look at http://www.lynda.com/, http://net.tutsplus.com/ , http://webdesign.tutsplus.com/ , http://Udemy.com and when you are ready for WP then WPTuts.

You should check out the online training at http://teamtreehouse.com

They explain everything you should know about web design and development pretty well.
I’m talking from my experience. They totally worth the money. I started their courses a couple of months ago and this month I will release my first WordPress theme!

Everyone working on the web since just a few years ago learned a completely different way than you would today. All the sites mentioned are excellent resources that didn’t exist 2 years ago. I would say go for Treehouse to get HTML, CSS, JS basics and then use TutsPlus to learn more about specific platforms.

+1 for Treehouse. I am currently a member and i think they are fantastic.

Combine Treehouse with TutsPlus and Lynda and you have everything you need to learn Web Design and Development.

Chris Coyier has a great course on Lynda for WordPress theme Development.
