Improving and Removing Envato Market Image Watermarking

We’re making some changes to our Envato Market image watermarks and we have a full announcement right here! Here’s a quick overview of what’s changing:
  • Watermark update: Rebranded (new Envato logo), lighter, smaller, less intrusive, less distracting, allows your work to shine through!
  • Removing watermarks from some GraphicRiver categories: We realized that watermarking is not necessary for preview images for some categories so we’re removing them from Fonts, Presentations, and Add-ons.
  • Potential, Future Plans: We’re also looking at removing watermarks down the track from other GraphicRiver categories like Print Templates and Product Mockups. Stay tuned!
READ FULL ANNOUNCEMENT

With any watermarking system the key is to weigh up the risks and find that perfect balance between unethical users versus showcasing work to buyers. We think we’ve foun that right balance with the new watermark.

At this stage we’re not reprocessing existing items to have the new watermark applied, simply because its a surprisingly large technical task. However, down the track we’ll look at looping back to this.

Please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any questions or concerns!

Looks much better, finally some improvement for us poor graphicriver guys. ;-) Good job!

P.S.: It should be optional for the Author to have watermarks after all.

Optional watermark would be fine.

Good to hear! I was thinking there should be a watermark on PSD Themes on TF – I feel like we expose our work too much, and it’s usually at high quality compression too, which makes it possible to lift elements off.

Also some tend to repost single PSD pages on the web, or use them for preview purposes in other stock items, so without a watermark we can’t tell if they have a licence or not. At least when we see an unwatermarked version we can assume it originated from a legitimate purchase.

PSD Theme sales could be better, and a watermark would improve sales.

That’s interesting! I must admit I’d been mostly thinking about things to unwatermark (e.g. Print Templates, Product Mockups are two more good candidates). But PSD Templates does make sense. To be honest, our entire PSD Templates category needs a better previewing system. That screenshots thing is so bad! Will give it some thought to see if there’s a quick solution we can roll together!
