I have a problem with the sub menus that show at hover. They all show the first item “Popular items” and it kinda makes the viewer to click that link, instead of looking for “All Items” option or other ones.

If a buyer comes to the site with a type of file in mind and they go to the section it belongs, the next step is to present a list with that category broken down into further sections to narrow down the search.

Since our eyes naturally read from left to right and top to down, anything in the first entry will naturally have the first attention. We should be showing a list for the buyer to choose from, but instead we present them a link to a Popular page of what other buyers have chosen as good files. The problem with this is the type of file that the buyer had in mind might not actually be on the popular page, but they might get distracted and end up buying one of the top files since it seems good with a gazillion sales.

The procedure for browsing should always follow this route

1) Buyer has “an idea” in mind of the type of file
2) Primary: Buyer is presented with a list which breaks down the search to the type of file
3) Secondary: Buyer is presented with a list which breaks down the type of file into categories
4) Tertiary: If they can’t figure out what category the file belongs they are presented with “View All Files”.
5) Last option: Buyer is presented with a list of ‘Popular Files’ which shows files other buyers have selected as being good files. (This does not necessarily mean they’re original idea of the file might be here, but it will show the best files other buyers have chosen before)

This discussion comes from Flashden times…
I don’t think things will change, no matter the ideas that could merge up on forum. Populars featuring strategy returns more money for Envato. That’s all and it happens on any ecommerce business. Legit enough. Move on.

Is that your final answer? :D

But why we have to accept that’s the way it is. Why not have a fair marketplace? If some files are making $100 000 a month and the rest mediocre to average sales, surely we need to realize something is “out of balance”.

I thought we all want to make money here, so why do we always have to take this view that the way the system work is set in stone. What about 5 to 10 years from now, surely we need to make it easier for buyers to find content.

Envato is running a business her where it’s trying to find more talented people to join our ranks, if all they “advertise” is the new items that have 0 – 10 sales no ones going to be too interested. If I can see how popular drupal files are vs ghost for example I know what I need to be concentrating on.

Don’t get me wrong I hate the fact that there is a good chance someone will buy another person items over mine just because it has a few more sales but that’s just the way it is, if I’m buying something off amazon I’ll search by units sold or more reviews.

Yes but the point you’re missing here, is if you’re on Amazon and searching “Health books” and then you see a link to “View Popular”, you won’t be taken to a page with the most popular items on Amazon.. you will be taken to a page with the most popular Health books. The opposite is happening right on the front page of each marketplace – which is the page with the highest traffic. If you break down new items by category, and choose “View Popular” you see the most popular items on the whole marketplace NOT of the category.

I’m here from two years and my second year is worse than first one. After reading this thread finally I found the answer why I sell more old items than new ones against any logic. This reminds me for Paragraph 22 or something similar – never mind how awesome new items I make, they will not sell so well as old items.

These are the reasons why we can’t just stop with current system and should expect change from Enavto’s side. As already mentioned by many, the current exposure system was formed at the FlashDen times when the size of library and users were tiny. Now the marketplaces grown, number of items / Uploads / Buyers become 10+ times higher. Surely the exposure between new items and top sellers needs to maintain a proportion.

It will not help in the long run. If the initial exposure time – popularity benefits – searchability aren’t balanced, we can’t expect consistency of profit – including Envato. About time :D

Surely the balance between exposure of new items and top sellers needs to maintain a proportion.

Well ofcourse if the system doesn’t change but the amount of new files increases daily. Then logic follows that exposure for new files decreases whereas exposure for Popular Items remains the same. Therefore the exposure between New files and Popular files becomes increasingly more disproportionate.

And the higher the sales count, the higher you are on every filtering option on the entire marketplace, so therefore exposure for Popular items grows exponentially greater over time.

The flow of traffic should always follow this route shown graphically below when ever a user selects a category and is browsing the site, otherwise by default the user will always see links to the main Popular Items page.

This will make each category it’s own competitive environment. The results of these sales per category Popular Items page will then reflect each week on the main Popular Items page.

Ok this is not going to win any awards as an infographic :D but I think this a better model for the ecosystem, also added in “Popular New Items” for talking point.
