Is it illegal to create a wordpress theme from someone's html template ?

hi , i have a question about converting html templates to wordpress themes . is it illegal to convert a html template that someone else has designed it ? i mean finding a html template from themeforest or other websites and converting it to wordpress and selling the wordpress theme on themeforest .

You can convert to wordpress, a html template created by someone else, if and only if that person agrees. Otherwise you can’t.

You need to get the original authors permission.

You will need to make a deal with the original author. Fixed price, percent, that you will set in the deal.

what about psd templates ? for example : themeforest psd templates

You can convert it, but you can’t resell it without the author’s permission

Great topic, i’m coming with another question: how can you get the permission of the author? He must only say “Yes, you can do it”, or are there any papers to sign off?
